Rather Lovely Love Trees Organic Skin Tonic

High quality witch hazel can be hard to come by these days but the Rather Lovely range includes Love Trees Organic Skin Tonic which is as pure a witch hazel as you can get. It is excellent as a toner for skin affected by acne and can also really help reduce pain, and decrease the itching and swelling that often comes with bug bites, including those from mosquitos. Additionally, witch hazel can help speed up the healing process.
It is an astringent so contracts body tissues and reduces bleeding, so it makes sense that you can use it to make bruises fade faster and even help heal the underlying damage. Just apply witch hazel to a cotton ball or cloth and hold against the bruise for a few minutes two or three times per day.
It is important to use a good quality product as cheap witch hazel does not contain the correct amount of the most potent medicinal ingredients of Hamamelis Virginiana, the tannins. High quality products however act as a topical antioxidant much like green tea and contain polyphenolic compounds that may help protect skin from sunburn and photoageing. Of course, always be sensible in the sun avoiding prolonged exposure in the middle of the day, wearing a hat and covering up with a cotton shirt. Witch hazel can help but it isn’t a sunscreen per se. It is however of benefit if sunburn does occur and can be used as a natural after-sun to relieve pain and reduce redness.

As an astringent witch hazel can be used to cool and soothe the irritation of varicose veins and haemorrhoids and it is said to have a weak effectiveness against some common germs and viruses including herpes and influenza.
Traditionally it is used for the topical treatment of cold sores, nose bleeds, varicose veins, haemorrhoids, oily skin and acne, insect bites and stings and minor sunburn. It’s a great first aid remedy to take on holiday.
Some people recommend it to help reduce the purple appearance of skin affected by rosacea and in my experience it can be very useful in this respect but caution is required. Although high quality pure witch hazel is very unlikely to cause any problems, cheap alternatives can exacerbate the complaint. Always tread carefully with rosacea and if witch hazel is ineffective try organic rosewater (Rather Lovely Love Floral Organic Skin Tonic) instead as a gentler alternative.
Apple cider vinegar is known to improve circulation in the vein walls and is an effective anti-inflammatory in its own right. A 50:50 mix with witch hazel can be applied to varicose veins to help reduce swelling and improve appearance. This makes a cheaper natural remedy than using witch hazel on its own.
